Zynq UltraScale+

Development of an FPGA assembly for the OTB-5G+ project

FPGA/SoC: AMD Zynq UltraScale+
Application: Compact interface card for VLC communication, wireless communication

Within the framework of the OTB-5G+ project, we developed an FPGA assembly 'VLC Interface Module' for the broadband network connection of wireless transmission media. For the OTB-5G+ project, the assembly is utilised for the implementation of a VLC (Visible Light Communication) line. Furthermore, it can also be used for radio applications with up to two antennas and 400 MHz bandwidth. The network connection is carried out via the integrated 10 Gbit Ethernet interface.

The VLC interface module is developed and optimized for next-generation LiFi systems as part of the project LINCNET (LiFi-based 5G for industrial and medical networks). The VLC interface module serves as an interface for the integration of visible light communication (VLC) into the higher-level network architecture for 5G/6G and future mobile communication standards. In addition, the VLC Inferface module is suitable for a wide range of applications, for example:

  • Software defined radio
  • Wired and wireless communications
  • Massive Mimo
  • Multi antenna radar applications
  • Quantum computing.

The assembly contains the following main components:

  • AMD SoC Zynq UltraScale+ (FPGA with ARM processor cores)
  • Analogue/digital converter (ADC) with 2 channels, 12 bit resolution and a sampling rate of 1 GSPS
  • Digital/analogue converter (DAC) with 2 channels, 16 bit resolution and a sampling rate of 2,8 GSPS
  • 8 GByte DDR-RAM (PL), 2 GByte DDR RAM (PS)
  • Power supply for the generation of the required operating voltages
  • on board clock generation wieth external / internal Ref. / Sync.
  • 2 x 10G Ethernet Interfaces (SFP+)
  • USB3-. UART-, 1G Ethernet interfaces
  • FPGA boot via MicroSD card
  • board size: 140 mm x 140 mm
